Who gets an N Permit?

Answer:

A document that is issued to persons who have submitted an asylum request to the State Secretariat for Migration (Secrétariat d’Etat aux migrations – SEM) and are awaiting a final ruling on their request for asylum. Normally the N permit has a short renewal delay (every 6 months).

The N permit is also issued to persons who have submitted an asylum request in Switzerland and are awaiting a decision by SEM on the applicability of the Dublin Convention (N Dublin).

Holders of an N permit are entitled to reside in Switzerland for the duration of the asylum process. They are attributed to a canton by SEM. N permit holders are not allowed to change the canton they have been attributed to, except for reasons prescribed by law.

The N permit is not a travel document and does not prove the identity of the holder.
